Up Front by Bill Mauldin Editor’s note about Up Front by Bill Mauldin Not long after he returned home from the war in 1946, Verdi purchased Bill Mauldin’s book, Up Front. ![]() Bill Mauldin makes the book funny and interesting to read. Owner signatures on the front paste-down and title page The dustjacket is complete and unclipped. Up Front is a phenomenal book about a man in the WW2 fighting but also writing comics about it too. Brown cloth binding with Willie and Joe on the front cover titling in black on the spine. This is a Very Good copy of a later printing of the First Edition (stated "Fifth Printing, May, 1945" and noting three printings prior to publication). A second came duringr his postwar career as an editorial cartoonist. As a cartoonist for "Stars and Stripes" Bill Mauldin (1921-2003) created his memorable characters Willie and Joe, affording a ground's eye view of World War Two that earned him his first Pulitzer Prize (as well as a Purple Heart). ![]()
